The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had let in ten goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Roman club appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.
The Youngster's Surprising Comeback
One individual remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team without replacements.
He joined originally when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."
Finding His True Position
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
