This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard physical horror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple face the type of challenges that arise in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
