Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
